MGE Previews Electric Buses

Madison Gas and Electric (MGE), our regulated utility, is partnering in a number of ways to advance the electrification of transportation throughout the communities we serve.

Proterra Electric Bus

In June, MGE facilitated a series of events to preview an all-electric bus. Manufactured by Proterra, the bus has zero tailpipe emissions and a range of up to 250 miles.

Proterra will be providing the City of Madison Metro Transit its first three all-electric buses. In 2017, MGE and the City of Madison partnered to secure $1.3 million in federal funding for the buses. The City of Madison has a goal to electrify 50% of its fleet by 2035.

As part of the partnership with Metro Transit, MGE is providing:

Metro Transit expects the first three electric buses in 2020.

Reduced carbon emissions

The electrification of transportation is considered a key strategy for reducing carbon dioxide emissions. MGE is targeting at least a 40% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030. The company's longer-term goal targets carbon reductions of at least 80% by 2050.

Transportation accounts for more than 25% of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. MGE is working with residential, commercial and fleet customers, both public and private, to grow the use of electric vehicles to advance shared energy goals and to enable future market growth.
