MGE Program Recognized for Innovation

Madison Gas and Electric (MGE), our regulated utility, has been recognized for an innovative energy-saving program for large energy users. The Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance, a regional organization dedicated to advancing energy-efficient technologies, products and best practices, awarded MGE and Wisconsin's renewable energy and energy efficiency program Focus on Energy its 2018 Inspiring Efficiency Award for Innovation for MGE's On Demand Savings (ODS) Program.

Reducing Peak Electric Use

The ODS program offers large customers, such as schools and businesses, the tools and strategies to identify low or no cost strategies to control their energy use during times of peak electric demand. "Peak" occurs when utilities must use their maximum capacity of electric generation and distribution lines to serve the grid. Customers use a "dashboard" to monitor their energy use, enabling them to take action to reduce their use during "peak" and save on energy costs.

"This partnership with Focus on Energy and program participants is one way that MGE works with customers and shares information to improve energy efficiency," explained Don Peterson, MGE Assistant Vice President - Strategic Products and Services. "Increasing engagement with customers around energy efficiency and conservation is a key objective in MGE's Energy 2030 framework for a more sustainable future."

MGE and Focus on Energy partnered to launch the program. MGE received approval from state regulators to extend the program through 2018.
