Bringing Cutting Edge Technologies to Customers
Our subsidiary, Madison Gas and Electric (MGE), is partnering with Sense Labs—the maker of the Sense home energy monitor—to explore this new technology with some MGE customers.
The Sense attaches to a home's electric panel to "listen" to devices in the home as they consume electricity. The Sense then develops profiles of those devices' energy consumption.
The information is available through an app on a customer's mobile phone, enabling the customer to take action to reduce a home's energy use.
Customers' experience will help MGE understand how home energy monitoring technology could be used to better manage the grid and encourage customers to reduce their use during peak periods when demand for electricity is high. Giving customers more control over their energy use is a key objective under MGE's Energy 2030 framework for the future.
Under Energy 2030, we set the goals of increasing renewable energy and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 40% from 2005 levels by 2030. This target is consistent with the U.S. emissions targets for the 2030 time frame established as part of the Paris Agreement on climate change.
The Boston-based Sense Labs is part of the portfolio of Energy Impact Partners, a utility-focused technology fund supported by MGE Energy. Participation in and support for such forward-thinking funds gives us the opportunity to be at the forefront of emerging technologies and investments to build shareholder value, improve the customer experience and create a more sustainable energy future.
