| 150 Years of Growing With Our Community Staying Power history booklet [PDF - 1.2 MB] Our roots date back to 1855 when a few visionary, bold individuals launched the Madison Gas Light and Coke Co. They developed a $35,000 manufactured gas plant which initially served 20 street lamps in Capitol Park and a few homes and offices in the village of Madison. In the 1880s, the Madison Electric Co. built a small electric generating plant at the corner of State and Gorham streets. The $45,000 plant was built to serve the Hausmann Brewery. From these humble beginnings, MGE emerged in 1896 to flourish as a community energy company. Today, we celebrate the fundamental values that are hallmarks of our staying power:
